This project consists of 22 of illustrations and 9 murals for a preschool in St Petersburg, built by ЦДС
We used a limited color palette for a calm, nordic look of the interior.
Our characters are 8 local animals, mascots to 8 groups of children.
We featured elk, brown bear, mountain hare, long-eared owl, baltic ringed seal, red fox, siberian chipmunk and eurasian lynx.
All the animals are pictured twice. First, individually – next to the groups' playrooms. Then in the school hall – as an ecosystem, bringing everyone together.
In this project I've created all of the original illustrations using Photoshop. That allowed an easy transition from screen to wall. I really enjoyed both making the illustrations and painting the murals!
We've also designed a set of icons to accompany each animal.
These provide you with an idea of particular animal's diet and trail.
The icons stand for:
˚ mainly herbivore diet;
˚ fruits and berries;
˚ acorns and nuts;
˚ fish and other aquatic prey;
˚ meat-eating animal.
For the actual painting, we first match the colour of paint to the ones on screen. So far, so good!
Next, basic shapes of animals are painted. Here are first layers of mountain hare, baltic ringed seal and eurasian lynx.
btw, after this project I can proudly say that I have a successful experience of painting while the workers are installing lights, testing the fire alarm system and doing metal-works right next to me!

And here's the mural painting process. In large areas we use soft interior tape for clean straight lines.
Tip: if you're using masking tape instead, the paint will come off when you pull the tape.
